Chapter Eight

The snow started early that evening. Mason stood on the porch, watching fat flakes drift lazily down upon the pristine blanket of white that covered the surrounding fields. Or almost pristine—a deep channel had been carved through part of it a few days ago by a goofy dog and the rugged cop who couldn’t control him. The thought was amusing, but it also filled Mason with warmth.

He loves that adorable furball like a child.

Which made Steve kind of adorable too, in Mason’s book. God, if only I was sticking around longer.

The door behind him opened, and Kade came out, bundled up in his fleece-lined leather jacket and ridiculous, hot pink knit cap. “Hey.”

“Hey.” Mason couldn’t resist giving the pink pompom on top of Kade’s hat a playful bat.

“Dude. Don’t fuck with the pompom.”

“Yes, sir!”

Kade bumped him playfully, then they stood side by side for a few minutes, breathing in the crisp air and the faint electric ozone smell of the falling snow. Eventually, Kade broke the silence. “We’re about to open presents.”

This was a tradition in the Collier family. Most presents were saved for Christmas morning, but everyone was allowed to open one small gift on Christmas Eve.

“I got you socks,” Mason teased.

“I got you a dead rat.”

Mason chuckled. “Now, now. If I got you socks that were bright pink and purple stripes covered in sequins, you’d be ecstatic.”

“Really?” Kade’s eyes lit up. “Did you?”

“Not this year. Maybe for your birthday, if you’re really good.”

Kade made a rude noise and went back inside. After a final, brief glance at the snow, Mason smiled and followed him.
